The Golf Game
Less than 24 hours after I’d been away, solo-parenting and running on garbage sleep, my husband wanted to go golfing.
Old me? Would have picked a fight. Kept score. Held resentment for days.
This me? Paused. Listened inward. Named what I was really needing.
I asked for an hour to myself and family connection time before we each went our separate ways.
We both walked away happy — no blame, no bitterness.
The Skidoo Day
It was a warm spring day and he promised he’d be back by 4pm for family plans.
When 4:10 rolled around and he still wasn’t home, anger bubbled up.
Old me? Would have exploded, feeling disrespected and hurt.
This me? Placed a hand on my heart, breathed deep, and saw a younger version of myself — an eight-year-old feeling abandoned.
That old pain was the real trigger, not him.
Since then? Him running late or going solo doesn’t bother me — and our connection is stronger than ever.
The Tantrum
She was screaming at the top of her lungs, pissed beyond words.
Old me? Would have told her to stop or sent her to her room.
This me? Placed a hand on my heart, got down to her level, and focused on my breath.
I told her, “It’s OK you’re upset,” and offered a hug when she nodded.
Two minutes later, the storm had passed and she went to her room calmly.
She started having fewer tantrums — because I learned to regulate and she learned to regulate.
