LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?
I wouldn't have said it was separation anxiety thr I wouldn't have said it was separation anxiety three years ago, or even two years ago👀 I would have said.. "He's had a hard week, I better stay home" "I can't make it work" Or would have thought "I'm not OK with her sitting in front of the TV the entire time I'm gone, she's better off with me here" My mind was great at coming up with good excuses But truthfully, it gave me anxiety thinking about leaving her And at a point, even him It felt like I was the glue holding it all together and if I stepped away for one moment it would come crashing down - people worse off for it I suppose it wasn't simply separation anxiety but also a deep conditioning and fear that by choosing what I need and want, hurts and negatively impacts others It took time to meet myself in those moments, to create safety in my body and Self soothe my Inner Child But I am so glad I did Three years ago, or even two years ago I would have backed out with Jason being sick even though he was encouraging me to go I told Haedyn I was having a girls night sleep over and she said "awh, I'm going to miss you! I remember the first time I screamed at Haedyn at I remember the first time I screamed at Haedyn at the top of my lungs.. The look of terror on her face + tears following, she turned right around to waddle away as fast as she could away from me - only to realize I was the only one in the home She turned right back around and came to me, the one who caused that look of terror on her face My heart dropped, I felt so much shame. I'm the one person in this world who should make her feel safe That moment forever changed me I remember sitting down with my parents how nervous I felt wanting to be fully transparent and sharing with them the journey I was about to embark on.. how I was planning to begin sharing about generational trauma and how I see it showing up in Motherhood and relationships I remember sitting across the table sharing why and sharing with them this exact story I still felt so much shame reflecting back on that moment as I shared it - I think I felt like it was part of who I was But that couldn't have been further from the truth, it was so much more then that ✨I didn't have the tools or knowledge in how to support myself in the difficult moments ✨I've not had someone embody to me what the healthy emotional response would be in those moments, an opportunity to meet my Inner Child ✨That sometimes I've missed cues of my own needs, causing an emotional response So.. if you're ready to transform the way you navigate these moments so you can respond with more ease, patience and connection— I've got you. I used to think breaking cycles meant always stayi I used to think breaking cycles meant always staying regulated, never reacting…but last week, I lost my center and responded in a way that didn’t align with the mother I want to be The moment passed, I repaired with my daughter… but then came the familiar feeling of heaviness. I had a solo Galentine’s date planned, but I struggled to enjoy it. I kept thinking: This isn’t how I wanted to handle that moment. But instead of staying stuck in self-judgment, I reminded myself—this is the work ➡️ Breaking cycles isn’t about never reacting. It’s about knowing how to slow down, regulate, and repair when you do ➡️ A securely attached mother isn’t one who never makes mistakes—she’s one who knows how to reconnect after they happen That means: ✔️ Noticing the trigger for what it is (a nervous system reaction to a past wound) ✔️ Prioritizing self-regulation first, knowing it directly supports her child’s ✔️ Holding space for her child’s big emotions without making them wrong ✔️ Apologizing, taking responsibility, and discussing what she’ll do differently next time "I got really upset, and I didn’t handle that the way I wanted to. I’m sorry I was rough—I should have taken a moment to calm down first. I love you, even when we both feel big feelings. Let’s talk about what I could have done differently to support myself for a better outcome." This is the work. Not perfection, but presence. Not shame, but self-awareness. Not fear of messing up, but confidence in knowing how to repair. This is how we break cycles If this resonates, you’re not alone. I tried approaching it from so many angles but it I tried approaching it from so many angles but it ended with me at loss + practically prying a dress from her hands as a last ditch effort to keep the peace with the other little girls That was the beginning of the rupture I removed her from the room since we were on our way out anways but also to not have the dress dangling in our faces so we could regulate She was unhinged, hindsight I can see why, I sacrificed her peace in order to keep the peace with others without guiding her way to both Her arms were flying, her mouth spitting - beside herself I got triggered from the hitting, it took me back to another time + I found myself giving her a light smack on her butt Light or not it's not my style or how I want to raise my child - my response to her hitting is me hitting? It makes no sense I so badly wanted to be in our own space, anything to get into our truck+ figure this all out Her heels were dug deep mine would have been too if roles were reversed I told her if she wouldn't go to the truck I'll have to pick her up+ carry her which of course is exactly what happened She was screaming bloody murder, we were both pissed I put her in the truck with flailing arms, she tripped when she got in, fell backwards+ hit her head It was a disaster I shut the door to start the truck, took a deep breath+ climbed into the back with her I knew I needed to apologize, acknowledge my errors, discuss what I'd do differently next time+ most importantly focus on regulating myself knowing it would regulate her I let her keep her distance, letting her know it's OK to be upset, I let her scream at the top of her lungs to let it out I wanted to talk about this disaster of a moment from beginning to end to integrate the experience rather then leave it fragmented + overwhelming, while holding space for her side of it. She began to relax + found her way into my lap These moments it's so hard to not feel immense shame afterwards I'm realizing breaking cycles is not about never slipping, it’s about recognizing when you do+ knowing how to come back to connection. This is the work, this is the space I hold for women navigating these exact edges🖤🌱
I noticed myself immediately jumping into planning I noticed myself immediately jumping into planning my day, what we will eat for supper, what time I want to head into town, literally doing yoga thinking about what I need to do today that will set me up for next week, "oh I need to send this out" That I made my matcha latte and sat down by the fireplace and this thought occurred to me... What if, instead of jumping right into solving all my problems and worries, I grab my journal and write down ten things I'm grateful for? And let THAT be the energy I lead from today I needed this reminder today & I thought.. maybe someone else does too! What is one thing you're grateful for? I'll go first! I just got home from dropping Haedyn off for plays I just got home from dropping Haedyn off for playschool & I have exactly 2.5 hours to myself... I wanted to go for a walk but I also felt like I had so much I needed to do that I found myself starting to talk myself out of it The thought occurred to me, "is this something I'll regret doing or something I'd regret NOT doing?" Instantly it had me, it's something I knew I'd regret not doing but it's never something I regret having done It makes me more grounded, which makes me more patient as a Mother and overall human - my mind jumped to spending the afternoon with Haedyn, I could see me having more capacity for her The first five minutes feels like a pain in the ass, but after? I ALWAYS think, "I'm so glad I got myself out here" And the more I place my attention on that, the more I find myself doing the damn thing & the happier I am for it And by far the best part? I don't feel the guilt or disappointment that often comes afterwards of having not done something that genuinely makes me a happier healthier person Which I'd like to suggest the guilt we feel in these moments is often the conditioned emotional response we have to doing things for ourselves, it was the way we were met as children and them before us when what we wanted to meet others expectations or wants Yet another way I've seen the deep conditioning show up around feeling like I have to sacrifice my needs for the greater good of others The problem? If I am truly wanting to show up for the greater good of others, doesn't it make sense I'd want to do things for myself that allows me to be the best version of myself? One that takes care of my body so it's strong and healthy so I can keep up? One that creates pockets of space for herself to attune to her nervous system so she can stay regulated and calm, therefore helping her attune to those around her?
